With all the social distancing measures put in place, what can a person do for entertainment? You might’ve started exploring board games, binge-watching tv shows, or—if you are like me—started playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons. If you are unfamiliar, in this game, each player starts on a deserted island that they can develop using gained and built tools and skills. Players can earn currency; build homes, shops, and museums; and interact with villagers, merchants, and other players.

Nintendo’s hit game captured the consoles of players all over the world, selling 13 million copies in the first six weeks after release. If you have ever played, it is easy to understand the hype. The freedom to create an ideal world is entertaining and empowering. As I have returned week after week to upgrade my house and interact with villagers, I couldn’t help but notice the parallels between building the perfect island and working toward your long-term career goals. So as you build new DIY recipes, catch bugs, and pay off your house, be on the lookout for these career lessons that I have picked up on the way.

The most impactful career lessons often come from the most unexpected places. Whether you learn multitasking skills from your children, self-advocacy skills from social media, or even networking skills from video games, each lesson can help you build the career of your dreams.
