LinkedIn helps people connect to other people in the business world. The firm operates an online professional network designed to help members find jobs, connect with other professionals, and locate business opportunities. The site has grown to reach more than 645 million users in some 200 countries since its launch in 2003. LinkedIn is free to join; it offers a paid premium membership with additional tools and sells advertising. It additionally earns revenue through its job listing service, which allows companies to post job openings and search for candidates on LinkedIn. Linkedin is a subsidiary of Microsoft. 

Financial Performance

LinkedIn's revenue has grown roughly 200% from $2.3 billion in 2017 (following its acquisition by Microsoft) to $6.8 billion in fiscal 2019. The company operates under its parent's Productivity and Business Processes segment and represents about 5% of Microsoft's total revenue.

Revenue for LinkedIn added 28% in 2019 driven by record user engagement. 


Key to LinkedIn's success is the growth of its member network, specifically through current members inviting others to join. That growth has been substantial, rising from 150 million at the end of 2011 to greater than 645 million in 2019. For LinkedIn, turning a profit is highly contingent on converting free users into paying members. To that end, the company frequently adds new features and products to its site—primarily through internal development but occasionally through acquisitions.

LinkedIn is capitalizing on the success of its Marketing Solutions products by continually enhancing that business. In 2018 it launched Pages and Objective-Based Advertising. Pages allow companies to appoint administrators to curate community conversations on company profiles that include hashtags, tabs that display information on companies' history and culture, and investor and funding insights using Crunchbase data. Objective-Based Advertising includes an interface that gives sales and marketing professionals options to choose a campaign goal (Awareness, Consideration, or Conversion) and other advertising features and then automatically builds ads based on those inputs. 

In 2018 LinkedIn acquired employee engagement company Glint, whose platform regularly gleans employee feedback which is then provided to leadership. The next year LinkedIn revealed three Glint-enabled enhancements to its sites' manager tools. The Manager Concierge uses Glint's AI-for-HR technology to analyze employee engagement data and then recommends actions for leaders to take to increase his or her team's success. It also provides a summary of the managers' strengths and opportunities for growth. The ACT Conversation feature lays out a strategy for acting on employee feedback using conversation prompts.
