About Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP

Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner has established itself in the 21st century as an ambitious upstart on the global scene while retaining its historic ties to the Show Me State. Today, the firm has more than 1,400 attorneys and other professionals across three continents.

Come Together

Founded in 1873 in St. Louis as King, Phillips and Stewart, the firm became Stewart, Bryan, Christie and Williams through a merger in 1911. When Rhodes Cave joined in 1917, the firm took on the name Bryan, Williams and Cave. The firm launched a concerted effort at national expansion in the 1970s and turned its attention to overseas growth a decade later. It wasn’t long before Bryan Cave solidified its reputation abroad. In April 2018, Bryan Cave merged with Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP. The new firm, Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, has combined revenues of over $900 million and provides clients with access to international practice and sector teams in 31 offices across 11 countries.

From the Workplace to the Landfill

Bryan Cave operates under a “One Firm” model that encourages cross-practice and cross-border teams. Among the firm’s practices are corporate, finance, investigations, litigation, regulatory, and tax. The firm has more than 550 litigators around the world counseling on issues ranging from antitrust to international arbitration to white collar defense to employment to IP matters. Its reputable employment and labor practice handles litigation, workplace investigations, and regulatory matters. The firm’s lawyers counsel on cross-border employment issues, diversity matters, employee privacy, labor law, management and employee training, wage and hour, whistleblowers, and more.

The firm is also known for its environmental law work—a practice the firm has specialized in for more than two decades. The practice is wide ranging and includes such areas as Clean Air Act, compliance matters, insurance-related issues, international environmental law, oil spills, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, solid waste and landfills, water rights and Clean Water Act, and more.

Tech Lifeline

As proficient as the firm is in representing its clients’ legal matters, Bryan Cave also solves their business problems—in a way that’s more like a tech firm than a law firm. Bryan Cave has created a multitude of proprietary tech platforms that provide legal advice: CrossLITE, a workflow management tool; Cantilever, meant to support in-house legal teams in balancing legal concerns with their growing roles as business consultants; SwiftAgreement, a service that drafts neutral contracts without the need for attorneys; and Clear/Cut, an AI program that analyzes risk to provide advice on whether to settle an issue or fight it out in court.

COVID-19 Update

Due to COVID-19 restrictions our 2020 Summer Associate Program was shortened to five weeks and administered remotely. The robust program, consisting of 60+ presentations, programs, and trainings, including billable and pro bono work, exposed our summers to the breadth or our work and practice groups. Additionally, through social and networking opportunities, and formal and informal mentoring, our summers were provided many opportunities to build lasting relationships with our attorneys. Upon completion of the program all summer associates were extended offers to return as new associates (2Ls) or for a second summer (1Ls). We anticipate we will recruit second year law students for our 2021 Summer Associate Program beginning fall 2020 through early 2021. Please see our website for updated information regarding our hiring timelines.
