About Eversheds Sutherland (US) LLP

Eversheds Sutherland is one of the largest firms in the world, with more than 3,000 attorneys around the globe practicing in offices in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States. Formed in early 2017 through the combination of the U.S. firm Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP and the U.K. firm Eversheds LLP, Eversheds Sutherland provides the full range of legal services, including corporate and M&A; dispute resolution and litigation; energy and infrastructure; finance; human capital and labor law; intellectual property; real estate and construction; and tax.

Tax Men and Soldiers

In 1924, William Sutherland, a former clerk to Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, launched a tax specialty firm in Atlanta with fellow attorney Elbert Tuttle. (Later, Tuttle helmed the firm's pro bono counsel efforts in Johnston v. Zerbst, the U.S. Supreme Court case that helped establish the right to counsel for indigent criminal defendants.) Former name partner Joseph Brennan, who joined the firm in 1928, expanded the tax practice by navigating clients through New Deal legislation. The firm branched out early in its history, opening a Washington, DC office in 1937 and becoming one of the first national law firms. With the outbreak of World War II, only two partners remained behind as a large number of the firm's staff left to fight overseas, several returning as decorated soldiers. After the war, the firm branched into real estate, insurance, education litigation and corporate law with the help of Mac Asbill, who joined the firm in 1949. In the next few decades, the firm built departments in financial services, technology and energy, notably representing Northwest Pipeline Corporation in its bid to build the Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline in the 1970s.

The Snowball Effect

On the other side of the pond, Eversheds traces its roots to the founding of Evershed & Tomkinson Solicitors in Birmingham in 1914. In the late ’80s, the more modern incarnation of the firm was formed through the multi-pronged merger of several U.K. regional practices. Evershed & Thomkinson in Birmingham, agreed to merge with Norwich, Manchester, and Sheffield firms in 1988, with a view to being a single partnership by 1993. Between 1988 and 1995, firms in Leeds, Bristol, Newcastle, and Nottingham also jumped on the bandwagon. In 1995, the individual firms began operating under the Eversheds name, while other practices continued to join the fold, including several from overseas.

The conglomerate firm elected its first firmwide managing partner in 2000, and in the late 2000s, firms in Italy, Germany, Denmark, and Poland joined the fold. The firm also expanded into Scotland, Ireland, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Lithuania, Switzerland, Bratislava, the Czech Republic, and Estonia.
