About Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP

Founded more than 130 years ago, Hughes Hubbard has a strong New York presence and a wide geographic reach from coast to coast and also internationally. The firm is home to 40 wide-ranging practice across the firm’s four core services: 1. corporate, tax, and private client; 2. finance, restructuring, and bankruptcy; 3. intellectual property; and 4. litigation, arbitration, and investigations.

The Fabulous Four

Hughes Hubbard dates back to 1884 when Charles Evan Hughes joined the firm Chamberlain, Carter & Hornblower. In just four short years, Hughes became name partner. He went on to have a successful political career—including stints as the Governor of New York, as Secretary of State under two presidents and as Chief Justice of the U.S. But he stayed connected to the firm—returning several times—and was joined along the way by Allen Hubbard in 1917, Frances Reed in 1928, and his own son Charles Hughes, Jr. in 1929. The firm dissolved and reformed in 1937 to become Hughes, Richards, Hubbard & Ewing and in 1968, took its current name: Hughes Hubbard & Reed.

A+ Client List

Hughes Hubbard has a long history of litigation excellence, including in arbitration, corporate reorganization, product liability, antitrust, anti-corruption and intellectual property. Hughes Hubbard advises some of the world’s most prominent institutions, including drugmaker Merck, aerospace giant Airbus, Paris-based minerals company Imerys SA, and Goldman Sachs.

On the corporate side, the firm’s work includes mergers & acquisitions, aviation finance, media and entertainment, and Latin American transactions. The firm provides counsel to the likes of Grab, Southeast Asia's leading super app, magazine publisher Condé Nast, Madison Square Garden Company, United Airlines, and JPMorgan.

The firm also represents various sovereign governments in a wide range of complex matters, including multimillion-dollar bond sales for the Republic of Paraguay; energy project finance transactions for Ivory Coast and litigation for Denmark in its efforts to recover $2.1 billion stolen through an international tax fraud scheme.

KINDness

Hughes Hubbard associates pursue varied—and significant—pro bono efforts and are committed to giving back to their communities. Some recent matters include winning asylum for clients facing persecution in their native countries; helping parents reunite with their children who were separated at the border after securing their release from immigration detention on bond; and paving the way for several unaccompanied minors to receive green cards. The firm also works with various nonprofits in a pro bono capacity, including Her Justice, Immigration Equality, and Kids In Need of Defense (KIND).

COVID-19 Update

We continue to interview lateral candidates at all levels via videoconferencing and have been successful in hiring and onboarding new hires remotely. The OCI programs at most schools have been moved from Fall 2020 to early-winter 2021. While we are hopeful these interviews will be able to take place on-campus and in-person, we are confident that we are prepared to conduct the interviews remotely via videoconference.
