About Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP

With roots in Chicago, Katten has grown to nearly 700 attorneys across more than a dozen offices around the globe. The firm is known for its corporate, finance, health care, and litigation practices, among others.

First Chicago, Then the World

Frustrated with stodgy conventional methods of BigLaw management, 24 attorneys struck out on their own in 1974 to form Katten Muchin Zavis in the Windy City. With an emphasis on supporting an entrepreneurial and innovative culture that remains today, Katten built up its presence in Chicago for a decade and a half before eventually branching out to Los Angeles; Washington, DC; and New York—all during a very busy 1989. After its merger with venerable Manhattan firm Rosenman & Colin in the early ’90s, the firm has continued to expand to 12 offices nationwide, plus 2 more in London and Shanghai. Even so, Katten has thus far resisted following the BigLaw trend of growing at an exponential rate.

A Little Bit of Everything

Katten attorneys focus on everything from antitrust to environmental law and employment law to tax. The firm’s core areas include corporate, financial services, litigation, real estate, commercial finance, intellectual property, and trusts and estates. Katten serves the elite—including a third of the Fortune 100—as well as small entrepreneurs, government entities, nonprofit organizations, and individuals.

The firm’s health care practice crosses disciplines, focusing on everything from antitrust to compliance to financings to fraud to tax issues, and more. Clients are wide ranging, including academic medical centers, hospice centers and nursing homes, hospitals, insurers, life science companies, physician groups, private equity funds, and more.

The firm’s financial services practice has a deep bench of experience, with former professionals from the CFTC, DOJ, FINRA, and SEC. The firm counsels clients in financial markets on compliance, cybersecurity, product structuring, regulatory, and tax matters, among other things.

Pro Bono Pros

Katten boasts a robust pro bono practice and prides itself on being one of the first large law firms to employ a partner as Director of Pro Bono Services, to run the program on a full-time basis. The firm works with over 20 organizations across the country on pro bono matters, encompassing issues such as immigration, domestic violence, and civil rights. Katten also hosts a Pro Bono Service Award event every year, in which partners and associates who show a dedication to pro bono work are awarded $1,000 to donate to a charity of their choice.
