Pro Bono

Linklaters is recognized as a trusted advisor to all our clients, whether fee-paying or pro bono, and the greater community. We are committed to being a good neighbor and making a positive impact on the communities in which we live and work. We feel strongly that pro bono work is an essential part of being a responsible business in the 21st century. We also believe that lawyers can play a critical role in addressing social and economic deprivation, and in implementing solutions to poverty, suffering and injustice around the world.

While there is no shortage of deserving causes to support, we believe that law firms can be of most benefit to both the local and international community when they play to their strengths. Our work is targeted to programs that cover two global themes: Growing Capabilities of nonprofits through our skills and experience; and Growing Aspirations, which involves developing the skills and experiences of young people in our communities.

In New York, our work is also heavily focused on ensuring access to justice for indigent criminal defendants, representing such clients in federal criminal cases and appeals, state criminal appeals and death penalty appeals. Our pro bono practice is also highlighted by our work on immigration matters, where we represent a variety of clients from underserved populations seeking to obtain immigration status.

This strategic approach to pro bono work is both institutional in scale and individual in nature. We look for opportunities that touch on a variety of interests that support our local communities, and we find ways to best use our global network to support greater societal issues.

What our people have to say about working at Linklaters…

Alexander Weaver, New York Associate

I joined Linklaters for its standard-bearing international practice and the like-minded people who gravitate towards this type of work. It’s a truly global firm where associates at every level routinely work across continents on the most complex problems in the world’s leading legal markets. If you come with language skills, you will use them – and Linklaters will even support you with language lessons if you are interested in improving. As you grow in your career, secondments to offices abroad and to top clients are common. The opportunity to work abroad, and the fact that the firm makes offers on a global basis, both speak to our global approach to the U.S. practice. Another great thing about a firm with a strong, cohesive international network is that you find you have a lot in common with your colleagues. Linklaters associates (and partners) are adventurous, open-minded and respectful of each other’s unique life experiences. More concretely, we have a lot of fun.

My experience as a summer associate in New York and London was highly representative of my experience as a junior associate. The work and level of responsibility summer associates receive provide a realistic preview of life at Links. In between the swanky hangs – including a quick mid-summer retreat in London – you get substantive assignments and exposure to a variety of practice areas.

During their first year of practice in the New York office, associates are placed in a pool that spans all practice groups, including both transactional and dispute resolution work. This benefits those of us who prefer to gather more experience and information before deciding how to specialize. It also helps those new joiners with a specific direction in mind, as they can use the pool as an opportunity to train up and become more well-rounded lawyers. In my first year, I worked on matters touching six continents, across a dozen practice groups and as many offices, and began to focus on practice areas that interested me most. On the back of a strong training program and both formal and informal mentor relationships across practice groups, I was entrusted with complex tasks and given substantial responsibility. Even in my first months, I interacted directly with clients and with counterparts at other firms far senior to me. From day one I was afforded the space and resources to develop a network internally and externally and was given the mandate to maintain a strong commitment to community investment. When I was placed in our Finance Group in New York, I was able to leverage a wide-ranging suite of skills to work through novel and difficult issues, enabling me to take on even more responsibility at an early stage.

Menaka Nayar, New York Associate

I knew Linklaters was the firm for me when I came back for my call back interviews and met the staff, associates and partners. Besides being friendly, smart and motivated, everyone truly embodied a global mindset. Working across cultures and countries (and time zones!) is a way of life here. That resonated deeply with me, given my personal background.

During my summer, I was able to dive deeply into the practice areas that I knew I had a strong interest in as well as dip a toe into a number of other practices. I worked with people in different offices (London and New York) and practice groups and was made to feel like a true member of the team. The substantive and meaningful work I received helped me to further clarify my practice interests.

As an associate, I have had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of different, interesting matters. As part of the Dispute Resolution practice, I’ve worked on commercial litigation matters as well as government investigations - always with a strong cross-border/multi-jurisdictional element, which makes the work challenging but truly fascinating. I’ve also had the opportunity to work on some very compelling pro bono cases, from advising local, regional and international organizations on human rights issues, to representing individual clients in Immigration and Family Court. I’ve even been given the opportunity to study Spanish so as to better serve our Spanish-speaking clients. I could go on, but in essence, my experience as an associate has vastly exceeded my expectations.
