About Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP

Morgan Lewis has branched out from its Philadelphia roots to build an international network of lawyers in 31 offices reaching from Boston to Singapore and San Francisco to Dubai. The firm’s strengths include litigation, labor and employment, employee benefits, intellectual property, energy, investment management, structured transactions, and a variety of regulatory areas.

Brotherly Love

Morgan Lewis was founded in Philadelphia in 1873 by Charles Eldridge Morgan, Jr., a Civil War vet, and Francis Draper Lewis, a cotton merchant’s son. Ten years later, Morgan and Lewis hired Morris Rex Bockius, who became a driving force behind the firm for nearly four decades. In the early 1880s, the firm’s fortunes soared when it acquired United Gas Improvement Company as a client; the company eventually grew into the largest gas and electricity operation in the United States and remains a Morgan Lewis client to this day. Based largely on the profile it built from representing United Gas, Morgan Lewis brought key newspapers, railroads, paper companies, rail companies, and financial institutions into the fold in the ensuing decades. The firm has expanded beyond its long-held East Coast clients and now represents more than half of the Fortune 100 companies, while at the same time maintaining relationships with its long-term clients.

From Labor to Energy

Practicing across the energy, financial services, health care, life sciences, retail, sports, technology, and transportation sectors, Morgan Lewis has a diverse range of experience. The firm has four core practices: corporate, finance, and investment management; IP; labor, employment, and benefits; and litigation, regulations, and investigations.

Morgan Lewis is best known for its work in labor and employment. Nearly 400 of the firm’s attorneys counsel clients on a range of employment and labor issues, from benefits and ERISA to executive compensation and global employment matters to Labor relations and OSHA to wage and hour issues and whistleblowing—plus many more. The firm is among the top five in Vault’s Labor & Employment ranking. And the department even has its own twitter handle: @MLWORKFORCE.

The firm also boasts an impressive energy practice, which crosses borders and practices to deliver advice for its clients’ complex issues. Morgan Lewis lawyers handle all facets of energy transactions—from development to financing to acquisition to divestiture of resources—as well as regulatory issues relating to energy. The firm has experience handling matters relating to oil and gas, electric, nuclear, and renewable energy.

Big Impact

Morgan Lewis contributes approximately 117,000 pro bono hours annually to more than 1,800 pro bono clients. In addition to its year-round pro bono and community service initiatives, all 31 of Morgan Lewis' offices collaborate on an annual Community Impact Week, a global firm initiative comprising 175 community service and pro bono-related programs. More than 1,500 lawyers and staff participate in the program. The firm also recently named partner Susan Baker Manning as the firm’s first senior pro bono trial lawyer—bringing the firm’s full-time pro bono lawyer count up to five.

News & Awards

The “We Are Morgan Lewis” campaign celebrates the firm’s people. It embodies the firm’s commitment to inclusion, innovation, collaboration, engagement, and well-being. Coverage in the campaign this year included highlighting partner Chai Feldblum, recipient of the Dan Bradley Award, in an online Q&A discussing her experiences in the pursuit of LGBTQ+ equality and freedom. During Women’s History Month, we celebrated the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

The firm launched ML Well, a comprehensive and multidimensional well-being program offered to all firm personnel to create a healthier, more engaged environment. Coordinated by the firm’s first director of well-being and first chief engagement officer, ML Well is a unique, holistic approach to promoting well-being. The ML Well curriculum includes, among other areas, an online portal featuring cutting-edge research, events, and news related to positive psychology, as well as information on well-being-related policies and benefits.

In the past 12 months, Morgan Lewis strengthened the firm’s global proposition to clients with remarkable strategic growth. Some highlights include the addition of leading government officials, such as former chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, deputy solicitor for national operations at the U.S. Department of Labor, and a commissioner of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, building strength on strength in our labor group. The firm also added a 17-partner intellectual property team that boosted the firm into the top ranks of that practice, as well as adding significant firepower in corporate and private equity through a team in London and, separately, an investment management, corporate, and tax team in Washington, DC, and Abu Dhabi.
