Nelson Hardiman was founded in the City of Angels in 2001 by Harry Nelson. The firm’s four core areas of focus are government investigations, litigation, regulatory compliance, and transactional matters. Its lawyers are experienced in handling government investigations and regulatory matters relating to the health care industry, including matters relating to DEA compliance, fraud, investigations by the FDA, and HIPPA compliance. The firm and its lawyers have been recognized by such publications as The Legal 500, U.S. News and World Report, Best Lawyers in America, Southern California Super Lawyers, and Benchmark Litigation for their work in health care law.
Nelson Hardiman attorneys have represented all levels of clients in the health care industry on a range of litigation matters. The firm has also provided counsel in health-related transactional and compliance matters, including corporate finance, distressed financing, M&A, new ventures, strategic affiliations, and private equity. Its work has included developing a 50-state post-acquisition regulatory filing plan for a client; serving as Chief Restructuring Officer in a hospital’s Chapter 11 proceeding; and advising on Clayton Act and Sherman Act merger cases.

The Legal 500 recommended Nelson Hardiman as one of the top healthcare law firms in the country. In the category Healthcare: Service Providers, The Legal 500 writes, “Of particular note is the firm’s expertise in regulatory and FCA litigation.” According to the firm, Nelson Hardiman was by far the smallest firm recognized and only one of two firms on the list with fewer than 285 attorneys. The firm shares, “We are small but pack a mighty punch.”
Nelson Hardiman advised on the $235 million sale of two Verity Health System Hospitals. The firm served as lead regulatory counsel for the sale of the two hospitals—the 358-bed O’Connor Hospital and the 93-bed Saint Louise Regional Hospital—to Santa Clara County. The firm represents the biggest clients in the most sophisticated matters.
Nelson Hardiman is the largest health care law firm in Los Angeles and the second largest group of healthcare attorneys in California, per the firm. Rapid growth led the firm to move into a newly renovated, state-of-the-art, Westwood office last year.
