Teaming Up to Go Global
Norton Rose Fulbright is the product of some of the last decade’s largest law firm combinations, but the legacy firms each had a long history before the recent mergers. U.K.-based Norton Rose traces its history to the late 1700s, when attorney Robert Charsley hung out his shingle in London. Over the years, the firm expanded through organic growth and combinations to become one of the ten largest firms in the world by 2012. Meanwhile in the United States, R.C. Fulbright founded a firm in Houston in 1919 and was joined by Leon Jaworski joined in 1931. Fulbright & Jaworski garnered a strong reputation in the energy, financial, transportation, and health care industries.
In 2013, the two firms combined to form megafirm Norton Rose Fulbright with more than 55 offices worldwide. In 2017, Norton Rose Fulbright brought on another 300 attorneys through a merger with New York-based Chadbourne & Parke, which brought a host of experience in project finance, energy, insurance, and products liability.

The firm’s Energy team spans the globe and counsels clients on issues relating to oil and gas, power and utilities, renewables, and water. The team must take a multidisciplinary approach to handle its clients’ wide-ranging issues, including everything from antitrust and environmental law to IP matters and M&A to tax and contract law, to name some.

Norton Rose Fulbright received Global Legal Adviser of the Year, Asia Pacific Legal Adviser of the Year and North America Legal Adviser of the Year accolades at the IJGlobal Awards 2019, which recognized the best energy, infrastructure and mining deals and firms from around the world over the past year. A leading publication for the energy and infrastructure market, IJGlobal also honored the firm with 13 regional Deal of the Year awards.
The 2020 Chambers USA guide ranked Norton Rose Fulbright as a leading law firm in 29 national and statewide practice areas. Additionally, Chambers recognized 86 of our individual US lawyers in a host of practice areas, both nationwide and in their respective states. As a part of its annual North American Innovative Lawyers series, The Financial Times has honored Norton Rose Fulbright’s NT Analyzer, a data privacy detection tool, by naming it the winner of its 2019 New Products and Services Award in North America. NT Analyzer helps clients detect when personal or proprietary information ends up with third parties in violation of privacy laws and regulations.
Norton Rose Fulbright has met Mansfield Rule Certification 2.0 and Mansfield Certification Plus status, formulas that measure a law firm's success in promoting underrepresented lawyers and considering them for promotion to leadership and other key positions. Mansfield Rule Certification 2.0 measures whether law firms have considered at least 30 percent women, lawyers of color and LGBTQ+ lawyers for leadership and governance roles, equity partner promotions, formal client pitch opportunities and senior lateral positions.
- Norton Rose Fulbright represented BDT Capital Partners LLC in its acquisition of a majority interest in fast food chain Whataburger.
- The firm acted as lender’s counsel, representing the joint lead arrangers, mandated lead arrangers and participating lenders on the US$6.1bn financing of the Corpus Christi LNG liquefaction export project expansion.
- Norton Rose Fulbright represented Barrick Gold Corp- the largest gold mining company in the world- in a US$1.2bn buyout of Acacia Mining
- In 2020, the firm secured a first-of-its-kind settlement for Mobil Investment Canada, Inc. (Mobil), resolving a 15- year dispute with Canada under the North American Free Trade Agreement.
