About AWR Lloyd

AWR Lloyd has a 21-year track record delivering bespoke strategic advice, M&A support, and industry intelligence to some of the world’s biggest and most successful companies. Their mission, for over two decades now, has been to act as a catalyst for economic development, sustainability, and greater security in the Indo-Pacific region, through supporting clients in the design, development, execution and communication of value-creating strategies.

Their service approach is independent, discreet, customized and hands-on. As disruptive mega-trends, climate change, COVID-19 and geo-political uncertainties impact all sectors, they aim to offer clients fresh perspective, innovative thinking, and on-the-ground implementation support.

Founding & Expansion

AWR Lloyd was launched from the very beginning in a spirit of enterprise and adventure. The firm’s three founding partners, who had been working at investment bank Paribas in Paris, were frustrated with big company politics, bureaucracy and inertia. They decided to establish their own advisory firm with an emphasis on accountability, agility and innovation—and founded AWR Lloyd in the year 2000. The firm’s first assignment was an M&A transaction with the World Bank and Paribas to privatize the Romanian aluminum industry.

Within two years, the partners decided to focus the firm on the Eastern Hemisphere, and established activities in Australia and Thailand. They re-registered the company in Hong Kong in 2002. Early work included supporting the expansion of Banpu, a Thai-listed energy group, into Indonesia and helping them develop a best practice investor relations program; the formation of mining company Felix Resources, ultimately acquired by Chinese coal giant Yanzhou; and advising companies in the vanadium battery, renewable energy, fuel cells, oil tank terminals, mining and power sectors in Southeast Asia.

By mid-decade the firm had completed a $450M M&A deal in Australia, was supporting Banpu’s growth across the region, and executing consulting assignments in Vietnam. Between 2006 and 2010 AWR Lloyd expanded the geographic and sectoral scope of its business substantially, e.g. with an active Korea business, and as advisor to a number of larger transactions including the IPO of PetroVietnam Finance Corp on the Ho Chi Minh City stock exchange, and the $2.3 billion IPO of ITMG on the Indonesia stock exchange.

After founder Alex Wood became CEO AWR Lloyd spent the next decade originating and completing a number of big-ticket corporate finance and strategy consulting assignments including for Banpu (coal, power), ThaiOil (oil refining, petchem, power, bio-fuels), SPRC-Chevron (oil refining), the Thai Ministry of Science & Technology (satellites), Korea’s third largest conglomerate SK group (infrastructure), the UN Technology Innovation Lab (smart cities, circular economy and IT in the UAE and India).
