Washington Post names Bates White Top Workplace for fourth year in a row

For the fourth year in a row, The Washington Post named Bates White Economic Consulting a Top Workplace for mid-size companies in Washington, DC. The award was based on employee feedback from 341 organizations measuring company values, leadership, and work environment. When completing the surveys, Bates White employees noted the firm’s collegial and collaborative culture, career opportunities, interesting and topical work, social events, and strong philanthropic program.

Bates White employee’s modeling work pays off in NCAA tournament predictions win

Senior Consultant David Lorenz took fourth place in the Google Cloud & NCAA Machine Learning Competition, an annual event in which participants use reams of historical NCAA data to build predictive models. In this challenge, Lorenz combined data from various sources to build a predictive model and evaluate and adjust it based on relevant parameters. He predicted 76% of the games correctly. Lorenz is enrolled in the Master of Science Business Analytics program at the University of Virginia while working at Bates White. Lorenz’s performance applying machine learning to the NCAA Tournament is a great example of how he was able to leverage his professional and academic experience to innovative and powerful modeling approaches.

Bates White works on behalf of Apple in Qualcomm antitrust litigation

In Apple Inc. v. Qualcomm Inc., a Bates White partner submitted two expert reports on behalf of Apple. In the case, Apple alleged that Qualcomm used its dominant position as a supplier of baseband modem chipsets to cause anticompetitive licensing practices, charge royalties, and foreclose competition. The expert, supported by a Bates White team, analyzed the extent of Qualcomm’s market power in modem chipsets, Qualcomm’s conduct with respect to original equipment manufacturers (OEM), including Apple, and the effects of Qualcomm’s conduct on OEMs and Qualcomm’s rivals. The parties reached a settlement on the first day of trial.

Policy paper on electric vehicles helps inform regulatory decisions

To help public utility commissions (PUCs) develop policies for electric vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure, Bates White published a step-by-step guide for PUCs to develop and implement a “no regrets” EV policy. These steps address the steep learning curve PUCs face in understanding EVs, technical and economic challenges, and the growth potential as EVs ramp from just 0.3% of all US vehicles to substantial market penetration in many regions across the country.
