After graduating with a degree in Regenerative Biology from Harvard, I had my sights set on medical school; however, my growing desire to explore drug development led me to defer enrollment for a job at a diagnostics company.  There, my role in product management reaffirmed my interest in the commercial aspects of the life sciences, but left me yearning to get closer to the pharmaceutical industry.

As a Consultant at Putnam, I’ve been given the opportunity to have a noticeable impact on top companies in the pharmaceuticals industry and small biotechnology startups. I’ve worked on a variety of cases, including due diligence of a diagnostic company, quantitative surveys informing a drug launch, and even workshops training sales teams. A normal day might involve several physician interviews in the morning followed by financial modeling in the afternoon, broken up by a firm-wide lunch presentation. In my view, what really sets Putnam apart is the collaborative environment, where everyone from the partners to the support staff works together to make Putnam what it is.

The partners provide routine updates on a quarterly basis on overall firm performance, expectations for the next quarter, key initiatives and a forum for questions and comments. I don’t know of many other firms that do the same for its employees. In addition, the work environment at Putnam is pretty invigorating.”

I joined Putnam as a Life Sciences Consultant after my PhD in Biological Sciences from Dartmouth College. As an LSC, my role within case teams varied from recruiting physician key opinion leaders and interviewing them to working closely with client teams on financial forecast models. I was able to leverage my research experience when performing secondary research and in thinking about key clinical and biological questions as it relates to our clients’ assets. Another aspect of my PhD that I’ve been able to carry through is the systematic, hypothesis driven approach to structuring solutions to interesting biological and even non-biological problems. Now as a Manager, I lead day to day activities of my team while driving towards overall project objectives in set timelines. At Putnam, we work hard to focus on individual employee development in addition to delivering top quality work to our clients. In the last year and a half here, I’ve completed 10 projects for both pharma and biotech clients and have developed knowledge and expertise in multiple therapeutic areas.

My interest in healthcare strategy consulting stems from my exposure to the business challenges involved in translating technology from the bench to the clinic, which I encountered during my doctoral studies. Working closely with the Columbia Technology Ventures office and other strategic partners, I had the opportunity to develop patent applications and pitch presentations as well as evaluate regulatory pathways and potential investments. This experience provided the opportunity to learn about unique aspects of the business-side of the healthcare industry. I greatly enjoyed this experience and sought to find a career that would enable me to leverage my scientific and clinical knowledge to enhance my business acumen. My search for this type of career led me to Putnam Associates.

In my role as Principal, I work closely with the Putnam Partners to establish the scope of a project, develop strategic frameworks for project and problem structuring, and organize project workstreams. I also work closely with junior team members to facilitate project research, brainstorm solutions, and develop critical insights and recommendations. Throughout the course of the project, I have ample exposure to clients and am responsible for presenting our insights and recommendations during client meetings. My academic and professional experiences provided a scientific and business foundation upon which I could build at Putnam. I am proud to be a member of the Putnam community and would recommend Putnam to other team-oriented, hard-working individuals who are interested in developing strategic insights that impact the global healthcare industry.
