Now here's a TV business that really knows how to network. Turner primarily operates TV networks and digital properties that offer news, entertainment, sports, and children's content. Its portfolio includes big name cable brands such as TNT, TBS, and CNN as well as truTV, Cartoon Network, and Turner Classic Movies. Turner also manages or operates websites for sports leagues including NBA.com, NCAA.com, and PGA.com. Revenue primarily comes from subscription and advertising. Turner operates worldwide through Turner International. Founded by broadcasting pioneer Ted Turner, the business now operates alongside Warner Bros. and HBO as a unit of WarnerMedia, the news, sports, and entertainment assets of AT&T.
Turner licenses programming to affiliates that distribute its programming to subscribers. It also sells advertising on its networks and on the digital properties it owns or manages for other companies. In addition, Turner licenses its original programming and brands and characters for consumer products and other business ventures.
The business manages digital properties for sports leagues where Turner holds the related programming rights. Its popular Bleacher Report publishes digital sports content across Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Turner does business outside the US through Turner International, which operates country- and region-specific versions of its core brands including CNN, TNT, and Cartoon Network. All total Turner International operates more than 180 channels showcasing 46 brands in 34 languages in over 200 countries.
Turner experienced a dramatic transformation in ownership when it became part of the AT&T family in 2018. Through that acquisition AT&T paid more than $85 billion for Time Warner, which included Warner Bros., Turner, and HBO. Time Warner was subsequently renamed WarnerMedia.
The new parent company is working to more closely align the three content businesses, which had been operating independently. WarnerMedia's focus is tasking HBO, Turner, and Warner Bros. with collaborating on the development of a new streaming service amid heated competition from Netflix, Amazon, and Disney.
Ted Turner branched into TV in 1970 when he merged his private billboard company with Rice Broadcasting, a public company that owned Atlanta UHF station WJRJ, resulting in the formation of Turner Communications. Turner spun the billboard business off in 1975.
The company began broadcasting its station nationwide via satellite, and the first superstation was born. In 1979 Turner Communications changed its name to Turner Broadcasting System, and its station became WTBS.
Turner Broadcasting launched CNN in 1980 and acquired MGM Entertainment and its vast film library in 1986. In 1988 Turner Broadcasting formed Turner Network Television (TNT). It bought Hanna-Barbera Cartoons in 1991 and unveiled the Cartoon Network the following year.
Branching into films, the company acquired Castle Rock Entertainment in 1993 and New Line Cinema in 1994. Turner Classic Movies debuted in 1994. Turner Broadcasting took its CNN news franchise to the Web in 1995, launching an online news service.
Turner Broadcasting merged cable stations including CNN, TBS, and TNT with Time Warner in 1996 when the media giant bought Turner in a deal valued at $6.2 billion. Time Warner went through a disastrous merger — AOL’s $162 billion acquisition — in 2000. AOL Time Warner changed its name back to Time Warner in 2003. It was acquired by AT&T in 2018 for $85 billion after a prolonged fight with the US Department of Justice.
