Aquariums often are nonprofit institutions, limiting the earnings ability in this job somewhat. In general, aquarists make between $22,000 and $25,000 a year; senior aquarists can make $35,000 or more per year. In March 2016, reported that the average salary for senior aquarists employed in Monterey Bay, California, was $37,000. Aquarist supervisors or managers may earn $40,000 or more per year. The closest job to aquarist reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics is nonfarm animal caretaker; the median annual salary for this position in May 2014 was $20,340. The lowest paid 10 percent earned less than $16,750 and the top 10 percent earned more than $33,880. Aquariums do offer fairly extensive benefits, however, including health insurance, 401(k) plans, continuing education opportunities, tuition reimbursement, and reciprocal benefits with many other cultural institutions.
