The median annual wage for fine artists, which includes comic book artists, was $49,380, in May 2018, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Approximately 10 percent earned less than $20,020 per year, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $97,710 annually. Nearly 60 percent of all fine artists are self-employed. The field of comic books is small and highly competitive, and it’s extremely challenging to make a living as a full-time comic book artist. Many comic book artists are freelance artists who supplement their income by working in part-time jobs.
