Film and Television Extras

Unions and Associations

Union membership can be helpful in finding work and earning better pay, but it isn't required for you to work as an extra. Generally, performers apply for SAG-AFTRA membership after finding success in working as an extra for a time. Union membership can also help to establish contacts and possibly locate more work. For extras that plan to pursue acting, extra work is one way into SAG-AFTRA, and spending so much time on sets is a good way to learn the ropes. Extras may also join the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States and Canada.
