Geography is a very small profession. Nearly 58 percent of geographers are employed by federal government agencies. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) predicts that employment for geographers at federal agencies will decline by nearly 10 percent through 2024 as a result of budget cuts and the outsourcing of work to private consulting firms (where employment is expected to grow by nearly 28 percent). Employment at state and local agencies will be better, increasing by 3 percent through 2024.
