Musical Instrument Repairers and Tuners

Employment Prospects

Employers

Approximately 7,730 people work as musical instrument repairers and tuners of all types in the United States. About one in six are self-employed and may operate out of their own homes. The majority of the rest work in repair shops and music stores and for manufacturers. Large cities with extensive professional music activity, both in the United States and in Europe, are the best places for employment. Musical centers such as Chicago and New York in the United States; London, England; and Vienna, Austria, are the hubs of the repair business for stringed instruments, and any repairer who wishes a sufficient amount of work may have to relocate to one of these cities.
