The U.S. Department of Labor reports that in May 2015 the median annual salary for fitness trainers, which includes personal trainers, was $36,160. The lowest paid 10 percent earned $18,690 or less and the highest paid 10 percent earned $70,180 or more. Fitness trainers had the highest mean annual earnings in New York ($59,830), New Jersey ($51,130), California ($49,540), Connecticut ($47,820), and the District of Columbia ($46,520).
