School Nurses

Nursing specialties will be in great demand in the future. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nursing will grow 16 percent through 2024, and employment of registered nurses is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations in the years to come. The outlook for school nurses, however, is mixed. The U.S. Department of Labor reports that employment for nurses in education in general will grow around 6 percent, mostly in private schools. Employment of nurses in state schools may decrease by as much as 16 percent during the same period. As educational systems try to find ways to cut costs, professionals such as school nurses may be eliminated, or jobs may be reduced from full time to part time. Since cuts may vary by region and state, school nurses should be flexible and willing to relocate or to seek other nursing opportunities, if necessary.
