Salaries for secretaries vary widely by region; type of business; and the skill, experience, and level of responsibility of the secretary. Secretaries (except legal, medical, and executive) earned an average of $36,500 annually in May 2015, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Salaries ranged from $22,390 to $60,640. Medical secretaries earned salaries averaging $33,040. Ten percent earned less than $22,610, and 10 percent earned $48,670 or more per year. Legal secretaries made an average of $43,200. Salaries for legal secretaries ranged from $26,760 to more than $72,890 annually.
